1. Choose Your Role
Troop roles include:
Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster
Committee Member (helps with planning, advancement, fundraising, etc.)
Merit Badge Counselor
Parent Volunteer or Event Helper
2. Meet the Basic Requirements
Be at least 18 years old
Agree to live by the values of the Scout Oath and Law
Pass a criminal background check
Submit a BSA Adult Volunteer Application
3. Complete Required Training
Youth Protection Training (YPT) – Must be completed before you begin
Position-Specific Training (online or in-person depending on your role)
Optional but helpful: Hazardous Weather, Outdoor Leadership Skills, and Safe Swim Defense
4. Get Approved by the Charter Organization
Your troop’s Chartered Organization (like a school, church, or civic group) must approve and sign off on your role
5. Stay Involved
Attend troop meetings, outings, and training events
Help guide Scouts through advancement, service, and leadership
Support the troop’s goals and other leaders
